Indian Supreme Court Slams Judge Over AI-Generated Fake Citations
The Indian Supreme Court has intervened in a property dispute after a trial judge in Andhra Pradesh used AI-generated fake legal precedents to justify a ruling. Although the state High Court initially excused the error as a "good faith" mistake, the Supreme Court has labeled the incident as "misconduct" rather than a simple error. The top court expressed deep "institutional concern," stating that using fictitious AI citations directly threatens the integrity of the judicial process.
The case highlights the growing global challenge of AI misuse in the legal field, where software invents non-existent sources as fact. This incident follows similar warnings issued by courts in the US and the UK. In response, the Supreme Court has stayed the original property order and is now consulting with top legal officials and the Bar Council of India to establish stricter regulations on AI use in the judiciary.
